Our School Learning Resource Centre

Our Learning Resource Centre is for all members of the school community, but its main aim is to provide all pupils with a positive, enjoyable library experience.

  • The LRC is cross-curricular and adds breadth and depth to learning.
  • It encourages curiosity and develops pupil's research skills.
  • It promotes the enjoyment of reading and teaches children how to use handle and respect books.
  • Our LRC is a large bright room with modern shelving located in the Study Skills Block.
  • There are display boards on the wall along with shelving for displays. Staff and pupils are actively encouraged to provide material for display in the LRC.
  • The LRC has a study section where there are enough tables and chairs to seat a whole class. Four computers, a television & video and an Interactive whiteboard are all situated in this area. There are soft chairs available for more relaxed reading.
  • The LRC has over 6,000 books.

The books are divided into 2 sections.

Fiction and Non Fiction.

Non-Fiction Books

Non-Fiction books are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The classification numbers are printed on white labels on the spines of the book.

The books also have colour coded labels on the spine that correspond to the subject matter.

Fiction Books

Fiction books are organised alphabetically by the author's surname. The first letter of the author's last name is printed on a white label on the spine along with a jade green coloured label. All shelves in the LRC are clearly labelled.

Borrowing

Most of the books in the LRC can be borrowed. Pupils may borrow up to 2 books at one time for 2 weeks. The books may be renewed.

  • All books are issued electronically.
  • Overdue reminders are sent out in the class registers.
  • Reminder letters will then be sent home to parents. The first two will be sent through the register with the third and final letter sent in the post asking for payment of £4 per missing book.
  • If payment is not made and the book is not returned the pupils' book allocation is reduced.
  • In the school journal there is a library agreement. It must be signed by the pupil & their parent/guardian prior to the pupil being allowed to borrow books.
  • All books must be issued electronically and must not just be removed from the LRC. This is so we can keep account of all the books. Staff as well as pupils are responsible for all books issued to them.

Code of Use

  • No entry without a member of staff
  • No food or drink in the LRC
  • Do not write in the library books
  • Handle library books with care
  • Return library books on time
  • Be quiet and considerate

Lessons

Each class is timetabled for one lesson a week.

School Library Service

Our school subscribes to the Dorset School Library Service. We have over 1,000 books on long term loan which are kept in the LRC and available to borrow.

The Dorset School Library Service has made our LRC an Example of Good Practice and you can read more about us on their web site.

The LRC is open at lunchtime for pupils as follows

Year 5   Tuesday
