Staff
The school will ensure that staff - both teaching and non-teaching - are fully aware of the sun protection guidelines:
- avoid exposure to the sun during the period between 11a.m. and 3p.m. by using the parasols or staying in the shade,
- take care not to burn,
- cover up and wear a hat.
Staff should, whilst on official duties, follow the protection guidelines and act as good role models.
Pupils
Sun safety and sun awareness issues will be incorporated into the curriculum through the subject of PSHCE.
Parents
Where appropriate, parents/guardians will be provided with information on skin care, skin cancer and preventative strategies. They will be encouraged to ensure that their children are equipped for protection from the sun.
Uniform
In reviews of the School's uniform and clothing guidelines, consideration will be given to sun protection issues. In particular, baseball caps for outdoor wear to be encouraged, especially those with 'legionnaire' flap at back to cover neck.
Shade
The school will make provision for adequate shaded areas within the school grounds during lunch and break periods.
Outdoor Activities
Particular attention will be paid to the use of sunscreens and appropriate clothing. Parents will be asked to support these measures.
Attention will be paid to these guidelines when school outings, sports days, and other such events are planned.
Sunscreens
The use of sunscreens will be encouraged. Parents will be asked to identify children who may have an allergic reaction to these products.
- Adults will not apply sunscreen to children.
- Children will not use anyone else's sunscreen.
First Aid
Staff should be confident about their ability to deal with sunburn and should:
- move the casualty into the shade - preferably indoors,
- cool the skin by sponging with tepid water (N.B. very cold water can induce shock),
- give frequent sips of cold water.
Medical advice should be sought if there is blistering or other skin damage; or if there is dizziness or vomiting.
