At Branksome Heath Middle School our aims are:
- to create a safe and secure environment in which all children will achieve success and be rewarded
- to value each child's contribution and encourage the development of a caring attitude towards others
- to play our full part in helping each child to realise her/his social, physical, cultural and spiritual potential
- to encourage the pursuit of excellence which promotes the virtues of success and cooperation
- to help children develop lively enquiring minds to prepare them for life long learning
- to create school change by involving all staff and pupils in self-evaluation to improve their performance.
PSHCE plays an important part in achieving these aims by teaching children to:
- research, discuss and debate topical issues, problems and events
- why and how rules and laws are made and enforced, why different rules are needed in different situations and how to take part in making and changing rules
- to realise the consequences of anti-social and aggressive behaviours, such as bullying and racism, on individuals and communities
- that there are different kinds of responsibilities, rights and duties at home, at school and in the community, and that these can sometimes conflict with each other
- to reflect on spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues, using imagination to understand other people's experiences
- to resolve differences by looking at alternatives, making decisions and explaining choices
- to appreciate the ranges of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the United Kingdom
- to explore how the media present information
- to take responsibility for areas of their lives
- develop positive attitudes towards their own and others' self-worth
- participate in rule and decision making processes
- consider social and moral dilemmas that may be encountered in real life
- find information and advice
- prepare for change.
Equal Opportunities
In PSHCE all groups have the opportunity to experience, discuss, be taught and develop ideas. All ability groups have plans which relate specifically to their needs and in PSHCE.
Health and Safety
In PSHCE we are aware of the need to address Health and Safety issues and particular attention is paid to interactive and Circle Time sessions or games. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety by learning to consider the implications and consequences of their actions upon themselves and those around them, as an integral part of the subject. All staff make Risk Assessments to ensure that children learn in a safe and secure environment.
Planning
In line with the school policy for Planning, all plans are available on the School Network and all staff have access to the resources needed for teaching the subject, which are stored in either the PSHE cupboard or, for year-specific resources, retained by the appropriate year leader. Since the review of the PSHCE curriculum in September 2005, each teacher has also been provided with a folder containing plans and resources for the year's work. A copy of each folder is retained by the subject coordinator.
All Planning has Learning Objectives and suggested tasks for all ability groups. The Planning is split into a series of Units to allow Teachers the flexibility to adapt and revise work into lessons.
Assessment
Assessment in PSHCE is produced in line with the School Policy. All children know the Learning Objective and are given expected outcomes for each lesson. Work is marked regularly and at agreed times within the Year Group Planning, children are given an indication as to the level within which they are working as well as Targets for the future and ways to achieve improvement
Homework
Homework is only when required by the topic, as written into the STPs and will be used to reinforce and extend the work that has been completed in class.
Healthy Schools Scheme
The Healthy Schools Scheme forms an integral part of not only the school's PSCHE curriculum but whole school planning, teaching and extra-curricular activities.
Subject Development Plan
The continued development of PSHCE within Branksome Heath Middle School is worked towards by the creation of the attached Subject Development Plan.
Challenging Objectives, Tasks and Success Criteria have been set to ensure that PSCHE continues to be an integral part of the whole education of children and Branksome Heath Middle School.
